I didn't want to see this film. I didn't want to feel frightened. So this was the right kind of horror film for me. Why was it the right kind of horror film? Because it has genuine humor juxtaposed against the terror. Original humor. Good writing. Quick wit and actors who work well together as an ensemble.
The plot is basic. Five friends go for a vacation to a secluded cabin in the woods. This cabin is ballyhooed as some wonderful retreat where they can get some R and R and get stoned without being hassled.
Interspersed with the trip to the cabin there are scenes in a lab. To elaborate would dampen your thrill seeking and I don't want to ruin your guilty pleasure. But in this lab we meet Sitterson (played by Oscar nominee for Best Actor Richard Jenkins) and Hadley (played by Bradley Whitford most known for The West Wing ) who straight-faced says, "Let's get this party started." Both stars are kings of comedy. Their impeccable timing and subtle expressions will guarantee giggles. While they have vital roles to the plot, revealing their professions would risk spoiling the sheer fun of its horror. Yes, this film is fun. Lines like "honey toes", "Can we not talk about people and pieces?", and "Why is Jules suddenly a celebutard?" seem to go together like a bizarre stew and this is the weird and wily concoction that director Drew Goddard has created.
The five friends who make friendship meaningful are Dana (Christine Connolly), Curt (Chris Hemsworth), Jules (Anna Hutchison), Marty (Fran Kranz), and Holden (Jesse Williams). Jules is the sexy cutie while Dana is the brainy addition and Curt is the braun. Holden is the meat and potatoes member of the group while Marty is the guarder of the bong. Fran Kranz is a stand out with his quirky portrayal of Marty.
Director Drew Goddard also co-wrote with Joss Whedon and once again proves that keeping the writer and director joined at the hip makes a successful film. Can't let those writers get too far away from the talent if you want a smooth transition from the intent of the film to the actualization. A writer/director makes a seamless movie. And this film has whiz bang special effects that required heavy duty monitoring and I'm talking about... Well, see the film.
Oh, some of these special effects characters are a giggle and some are sheer mayhem making and some will make you grab your neighbor's elbow. That's when you know you're in the right place because after inhaling deeply are glad you came.
Not much to report so as not to spoil it for you except to advise you to go with a friend as you will need an elbow or two to grab. I did. Thrills are sandwiched in between laughs and you are not sure what will hit you next.. a funny or a tingle up and down that spin. So have two friendly elbows along with your popcorn and don't be afraid to be afraid.
